![]() And so, my buddy was like, “Why don’t you just put it up on the Internet?” I’m like, “I don’t know how to do that.” He’s like, just whatever, learn some HTML. This is like back when Geocities was still a thing. I mean, literally no one, zero positive response, absolute zero. And so, I sent all of my stuff to book publishers and magazines and everything. My friends thought they were hilarious, like you should get this published. It was I’m writing, where do I put it? And so, that’s kind of how I had to learn because I really started writing about ‘02 and I sent all my writing stories and e-mails to friends, and I sent them. Everything I did on the internet surrounded– it wasn’t like I’m on the Internet and I also write. I was very successful in what I did, but for someone who was as early as I was, I mean, there were fields of gold I just passed by because it’s like ashes, money, who cares? So, no, it’s not like I was writing. If I had been smart about, I was early on the Internet, if I’d been like, oh, this is a business, I want to make money, I wouldn’t have gotten into writing. I don’t know, who would be a writer? Brad Weimert: Weren’t you managing a blog or something that was… Tucker Max: The Internet stuff was my foray into writing. In my mind, the only people who were writers were like lame b*tches. Brad Weimert: Was it? Tucker Max: Yeah, I went to law school and I had no plans of being a writer. That was the first book, but not the beginning of your writing, right? Tucker Max: No, it’s pretty much. So, I want to at least hear the basics of that because I got introduced to I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell years ago, which is hilarious. So, most people know you because you are an unusual character that took your unusual lifestyle and wrote books about it and did another unusual thing, which is had three New York Times bestsellers at the same time, which is wild. Brad Weimert: And that’s a whole ‘nother topic as to why and when and how you ended up in your own bubble or in a bubble with others that share a similar lifestyle, but let’s start at the beginning. Brad Weimert: And that’s Dripping Springs, right? Tucker Max: Yes. Tucker Max: You live on the outskirts of where I am. So, you are now living in the outskirts but… Tucker Max: Outskirts of what? Brad Weimert: Austin. Brad Weimert: Yeah, it’s good to see you, too. Brad Weimert: Tucker Max, appreciate you coming and hanging out, man. We will dig into personal life, writing books, marketing yourself, not the book, and the nuances of building a multi-eight figure company, both the good and the bad. He also built a multi-eight figure company and will dig into the nuances of that. Tucker Max is a three-time New York Times bestselling author, which he doesn’t seem to have much affinity for. Brad Weimert: Well, you won’t accuse me of being boring on this one, but we will push the boundaries a little bit. “AI is going to make people who are good at media even better.” – Tucker Max.If you do not position it correctly for what you want, you cannot market your way out of that.” – Tucker Max If you lay the wrong foundation, nothing you can do after that will fix it. “It’s sort of like building your house.Use the book to market you.” – Tucker Max You can have fame and status, or you can have money.” – Tucker Max “It’s like you hear the saying in construction: ‘Good, cheap, fast - pick two.’ It’s like that in books. They care that you know something that they don’t know that helps them.” – Tucker Max ![]() And they don’t care that you’re a bestseller. “If you want people who are worth $30 million to invest with you, you need to speak to them. You’ll also hear Tucker share the key questions nonfiction writers must be able to answer before putting pen to paper, how Scribe adjusted its organizational structure to grow from $2M to $24M, and the role AI will play in book writing in the years to come. These unions are tried and tested, and have strong roots in the regional and national psyche, but as Siadatan points out, much also depends on what you’re looking for in the finished dish. “A smooth, butter-and-gorgonzola sauce, say, goes best with eggy noodles,” Roddy adds, “while a chunky, southern Italian aubergine sauce isn’t the same on anything but dried pasta spirals.” Local habits and produce also have a bearing. “Spaghetti with big chunks of cauliflower doesn’t work, whereas spaghetti with clams does.” It’s the sauce that dictates what type of pasta, and what shape, you ought to use.” And that’s from a guy who runs a fresh pasta phenomenon that makes 300kg of the stuff every week (“We all have one arm like Popeye’s”) and where punters happily queue for up to an hour for a plate of his pappardelle with eight-hour Dexter ragù (an import from Siadatan’s other restaurant, Islington neighbourhood tratt Trullo) or Insta-friendly pici cacio e pepe.Īs Feast’s Rome correspondent Rachel Roddy explains, some pairings can be explained by the simple physics of a certain sauce just fitting with a certain pasta: “Buttery sauces work better with soft flour-and-egg pasta, whereas olive oil-based sauces go more with flour-and-water pasta,” she says. “But the pasta is always – and I mean always – the vehicle for the sauce. “There’s a misconception that fresh pasta is somehow ‘better’ than dried,” says Tim Siadatan, chef and co-owner of Padella in Borough Market, London. While pasta would seem at face value to be the very definition of peasant cuisine – at its most basic, it’s just flour and water, after all – there’s more than a touch of snobbery at play when it comes to fresh pasta. While the compression grants Luffy's moves overwhelming speed and power, the range of his attacks is severely decreased. He can compress his arms, legs, and head. Unlike the previous forms, Gear 4 focuses on compression more than stretching in a manner similar to the Bane Bane no Mi. ![]() While Luffy is using Gear 4, his physical strength and speed are increased to the point where he is able to overwhelm a Warlord of the Sea, Donquixote Doflamingo, and the second strongest member of an Emperor's crew, Charlotte Katakuri, whereas before, Gear 2's lack of strength and Gear 3's lack of speed made them ineffective in the fight. Depending on the situation, Luffy can adapt Gear 4 into different forms. Combined with Luffy's rubbery composition and his compressed muscle structure, Gear 4 both adds explosive power to Luffy's attacks and grants him enhanced defensive capabilities far beyond what he can demonstrate with or without Gear 2 or Gear 3. They don’t have the luxury of making these kinds of mistakes once, much less year after year. Imagine, you could spend the same money and make more money and give customers more value.Īs always, I’m watching what the indie developers are doing. But I’ll bet for the budget of Quake 4 you could (if you dialed back the graphics to 2002 levels) build a breakthrough along the lines of Thief or System Shock 2, with the added bonus that just about every PC out there would be able to run the thing. Think of the games we could be playing with that kind of cash being thrown around. Think of the millions and millions of dollars being wasted on these short, dull tech demos. Look at titles like Haze, Crysis, and Quake 4. I’m talking about this stuff because it needs to be said. I’m not complaining because I can’t figure out where in this great big world I have to go to get more games. Games got shorter & shallower.Įvery time I bring this up I get people posting helpful suggestions like, “Yeah it sucks buy a console and stop whining.” Which misses the whole point of these posts. Release & patch became the common solution to dealing with the expense of playtesting. Graphics cards started to get harder to understand. Sometime around 2002 backwards compatibility began to shrink, so that you needed to stay a little more up-to-date to be able to shop in the “New Releases” section. A few games manage to get good graphics, and gameplay, and stability, and half-decent backwards compatibility (Half-Life 2 comes to mind) but most fail to deliver on at least two of those. Sure, graphics are better now, but we have sacrificed almost every other aspect of gameplay to get those graphics. (Both BioShock and Deus Ex 2 were greatly simplified when compared to their predecessors.) We have less room for risky new ideas like Thief. I can’t imagine getting another game as deep as System Shock 2 or Deus Ex. I can’t imagine ever getting another game as immense as the original Unreal. As development became more complex and costs rose, other aspects of the game had to be cut to pay for the bling-mapping. Graphics were at the point where games could be immersive and atmospheric, but they didn’t cost a fortune to produce. I think what makes the Golden Age of PC Gaming so special is that we were in a sweet spot, visually. Again, this is ignoring the lesser games, and expansion packs. The Sims, Deus Ex, Diablo II, Escape from Monkey Island, The Operative: No One Lives Forever, The Longest JourneyĪnother banner year. ![]() I could fire up any one of them right now and have a blast. ![]() System Shock 2, Quake III Arena, Unreal Tournament, Planescape: Torment, Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri, Homeworld, Outcast, Kingpin: Life of Crime, Rollercoaster Tycoon But ONE buggy sequel and FIVE incredible new games is a complete inversion of what we’re getting these days.) I played four of those games again this year. StarCraft, Unreal, Fallout 2, Grim Fandango, Half-Life, Thief: The Dark Projectįour franchises saw their beginning in 1998. We had graphics cards that opened up a new age of 3d, but they were simple to buy and would last for years. It was after the stone age of DOS, but before the four horsemen of bugs, DRM, graphics fixation, and console-itis came in and made a mess of things. If you’re advertising to the Average Joe, then Joe had darn well better be able to use the thing when he gets it home.Īnd there was a period of time where that was (mostly) true. It eventually made it possible for non-technical people to play some PC games.Ībout the time TV commercials for videogames start showing up you can say the hobby has come into its own and it’s time to start acting like responsible producers. Once you’ve paid the overhead in memory and performance, having an operating system there is actually pretty nice. It handled that stupid memory management / soundcard nonsense and gave developers a “stable” platform on which to build. And as much as I hate to say it, I think Windows was good for PC Gaming. Those were the rough and tumble years before the new technology settled into place and was packaged and distilled for the average consumer. Okay, her outfit is over-the-top, but that's the fault of the 60's spy movie heroines she's sending up, not the graphics engine. She's not a 10,000 polygon bump-mapped model, but Cate Archer of No One Lives Forever 2 manages to look pretty dang good. One way or another it detected 93% and earned 9.3 points, the same as Kaspersky Anti-Virus. TotalAV caught quite a few more at this stage. The next step in this test involves launching any samples that didn’t get picked off in the initial massacre. Rather than fill the screen with pop-ups, it simply displayed the number of threats in a single pop-up, with a link to view the list by filename and threat name. As soon as the folder opened, it started stacking up notifications. The Pro edition did better, by a long shot. Rather than score it a big fat zero, we gave it credit for removing 85% of the samples during its required install-time scan-quite a bit better than in its last review. Lacking any real-time protection, the free TotalAV antivirus did neither of those. Others wait until just before the sample executes to activate a real-time scan. For many products, the tiny file access that occurs when Windows Explorer gets each file's name and size is enough to trigger a real-time scan. We start the hands-on malware protection test by opening a folder full of malware samples that we’ve curated and analyzed. F-Secure and McAfee managed 100% detection in their latest rounds of testing, while Bitdefender and Norton detected 99%. In the latest test, that score dropped to an unimpressive 73%. Since that protection is the same, free or paid, we didn't have to run the lengthy and arduous antiphishing test again.Īt the time of our previous review, TotalAV detected 89% of the verified phishing sites, which is better than many competitors. Phishing sites try to steal your login credentials by mimicking bank sites or other secure sites when you log in to the fraudulent page, you've given away your account to the evildoers. However, protection against phishing sites comes from the same WebShield component. TotalAV’s score is decent, but not tip-top.Īs mentioned, the paid TotalAV includes real-time protection not found in the free edition. Avast Free Antivirus, AVG, Bitdefender, ESET, and G Data also got three Advanced+ ratings, along with 17.5 points from AV-Test. It earned 18 points from AV-Test and took three Advanced+ ratings from AV-Comparatives. Kaspersky, tested by all four, earned the full 10 points. And in three tests by AV-Comparatives, it earned top-tier Advanced+ certification once and Advanced twice.īased on those two lab results, TotalAV’s aggregate lab score is 9.2 of a possible 10 points. It didn’t quite make the 18-point maximum score in tests by AV-Test Institute, but its score of 17.5 was enough to earn it the designation Top Product. Now it shows up in two, with good scores. ![]() As you can see from the review, we’re not impressed with that move.Īt the time of our last review, TotalAV didn’t appear in test reports from any of the four antivirus labs that we follow. In a very unusual move, TotalAV not only removes bonus features, it also strips essential real-time protection from TotalAV Free Edition. Many antivirus companies pack full protection into their free product, relying on added features or a personal-use-only clause to drive sales of the paid version. Given this product’s high price, you won’t want to waste any licenses. TotalAV lets you gift unused licenses to others while giving them their own accounts. However, their installations remain part of your subscription, under your control. With any multi-license antivirus subscription, you’re free to use your licenses to protect family members. ![]() The other three invoke Password Vault, Family Account Sharing, and Settings.įamily Account Sharing is interesting. In the free edition, the big status indicator always displays a yellow warning status, because real-time protection isn’t (and can’t be) enabled. This product’s dark-themed main window looks almost exactly like that of the corresponding free antivirus, with one big exception. TotalAV Total Security raises that to six licenses and adds an ad blocker and a password manager, at a cost of $149 per year.
